Sydney Speedway April 13 2013
Dubbo’s Jeremy Cross wins the final 35 lap Sprintcar A Main while Ben Atkinson secures the Sydney Speedway Track Championship.
Wow, what a race, action and drama from the very first lap that saw both Atkinson and Smith the only real Title chances involved in a tangle in turn four before the first lap was in the book.
Just after the start Smith was in trouble with a flat left rear and lost control and went around in front of both Atkinson and Robbie Farr. Nowhere to go, Atkinson’s rolls and Farr slides backwards into the outer wall in turn four , both gone for the night . Smith seeing the opportunity to press for the Track Championship now with Atkinson out changes his rear and restarts.
After the restart it is clear that Smith is in trouble with damaged panels and shortly after is blacked flagged forcing another restart. This time Brady get a cannon like start and Caunt works hard to stay in touch, the pack behind are all racing in close company with Toby Bellbowen, Max Dumensy and Jeremy Cross all looking like they have race winning pace. The four behind Brady trade places by the lap as Cross works the cushion, spectacular but Cross has to work hard to recover as he runs over the cushion a number of times in his aggressive drive for the lead.
Dumensy is working the bottom and looking like a real strong chance as the track come in. Toby Bellbowen battles with Max Dumesny, the master and the apprentice as they exchange slide jobs on each other. The pair touch as they race down the back straight the two come together, Bellowen goes around.
Another restart, exciting for race fans and a big plus for Caunt as he is able get back in touch with Brady as they resume their scrap for the lead.
More drama was to come as Caunt applied the pressure to Brady looking for the pass and possibly his maiden win.
The pair race into turn four and Caunt is a little over aggressive with his pass attempt and the two get together with Brady sliding off into the wall and rolling over, his race is over. The stewards decide to take no action and the race restart.
Caunt leads Dumesny on the restart with just four laps remaining and a clear track ahead. The longer the race runs the stronger Dumesny appears. The pair race side by side down the back straight and they tangle .Caunt has a broken rear end and Max has a flat right rear. Their race is over and Caunt’s maiden win will have to wait.
Cross from Dubbo after watching the carnage unfold finds himself in a race winning position and from the restart races away followed by Trevor Green who has fought his way up from position twelve to second after staying clear of all the race drama .
Warren Ferguson after winning a transfer spot from the B Main ran on strong for third place.
Cross takes the 35 Lap win trophy home to Dubbo and Ben Atkinson will return to Darwin with the Sydney Speedway Track Championship.

After starting on the front row, Sean Barnett had to do it the hard way to claim his fourth Australian Litre Sprint Title. Twice Barnett had to pass Queenslander Steve Seefeld for the title win. Seefeld led most of the race after starting from pole, but the car went away from him towards the end which saw him come home third on the podium. With only three remaining Barnett re-claimed the lead around the outside with the aid of lap traffic to claim the win. Craig Smith had a fantastic night to come home in the second spot. Owen Milton and Chris Street completed the top five.
Next Saturday night Sydney Speedway will feature the Mighty Midget Speedcars as they contest the Gold Cup Feature . Litre Sprints, Wingless Sprints, Late Model and Super Sedan will be supported by Street Stocks.
Another great night of Speedway at Sydney Speedway.
