Kingshott !  King of Australian Speedcars

Kingshott !  King of Australian Speedcars

Last night at the fabulous Perth Motorplex Dyane Kingshott shot to the top of Australian Speedcar Racing when he towered above the field with a flag to flag win.

Kingshott has been the high marker in Western Australian Speedcar ranks for several years but with the Australian Titles within his reach several times it has always eluded him. Kingshott was on song right from the start of the night, winning all his three heat  races and the important pole shuffle .The classy West Aussie had the rights to the pole starting position ahead of the 40 lap Championship Final.

USAC Midget star Jason McDougal was alongside Kingshott as they faced the starters flag. Kingshott’s early domination would continue right from the drop of the flag. Kingshott was never headed throughout the 40 Laps but despite his brilliance, his hard-fought gaps on the field would be reduced by the four yellows throughout the 40 laps, despite these short interruptions the West Aussie continued to have eyes wide opened on the Title. Each restart Kingshott easily recovered his lost ground and a despite a hairy moment in traffic late in the race and Adams Clarke’s late race challenge the rights to Australia One were safely earmarked for the tail of the Bunbury Subaru/Cochrane’s Sheering Sheds/Esslinger.

The WA 24 is NOW AUSTRALIA 1

The Australian Speedcar Championship trophy goes overseas

a1 overseasThe Australian Speedcar Championship trophy goes overseas for the second successive year following Rico Abreu’s dominance this weekend at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway.

Rarely headed in races on this tour Abreu went into the final night with high points after the heats on Friday night. Beaten to the checker only once on the final night and that was in the heats by Queensland’s Anthony Chaffey. The seasoned 25 year old USAC professional started the Championship Feature from that magic position P1 with Kiwi Hayden Williams out of P2 and defending Champion Michael Pickens in P3.

It was no surprise that Abreu raced into the early  lead with Williams running a steady pace to keep the Californian in check. By lap 12 Abreu was still maintaining a Championship winning lead but the defending Champion Pickens still had the bit between his teeth and closed then passed Williams for second on lap 12 .Pickens dream of a second A1 Plate was gone four laps later when he experienced engines problems and returned to the infield.Abreu flag

Abreu appeared untroubled in the lead but it was Brady Bacon who was starting to bring the crowd alive as he forced his way through the field and by lap 20 was in second and looking the only danger to Abreu.Bacon started to close the gap to Abreu but the two times Chili Bowl Champion had this race well under control , as brilliant as Bacon was Abreu and his Spike /Toyota had the challenge covered.

Passing the checker it was Rico Abreu the new Australian Speedcar Champion from the fast finishing Brady Bacon and Nathan Smee the first of the Australians across the stripe. Of the four New Zealanders in the field only Chris Gwilliams finished the race, Pickens, Williams and Mosen all were DNF..Alex Bright, finished in 4th ZachDaum in 8th and Andrew Felker in 9th..

Abreu and Keith Kunz set such a high standard during this tour and the Australian Championship is just reward .The Bullet by Spike /Toyota they prepared for this tour down under was “Gem”. Speedway fans should also applaud Todd Wanless and his Raw Metals Corp for their support of Keith Kunz and his Team.Abreu Brisbane

Well done Rico, as Australian Champion you will be wonderful ambassador for Australian Speedcars and Speedway.

Want the hairs on the back of your neck to stand up this week end

Want the hairs on the back of your neck to stand up this week end then better get along to Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway this week end for the Speedcar Championship of Australia. Get yourself down to the fence line where you will feel the sounds as the midgets get into the track and challenge the cushion. If you get clay in your hair and the smell of racing fuel in your lungs you will have had a get night no matter who wins.Brady Bacon

For seventy five years this prestige Championship has attracted not only the best Midget Speedcar drivers in Australia but the very bravest and talented from New Zealand and the USA.South Australia and Tasmania are the only States not represented but other Teams have been arriving after long hauls up the highways and across Oceans.

The defending Champion is seven times New Zealand Champion Michael Pickens. Fellow Kiwis Brad Mosen, Hayden Williams and Chris Gwilliam make up the Kiwi challenge. The favorite for the Championship must be Two times Chili Bowl Champion and 2014 USAC Midget Champion Rico Abreu base on current Australian form. Abreu will be joined by Brady Bacon, Zach Daum, Andrew Felker and Alex Bright, all have major US Title to their names and plenty of experience on Australian track.PickensA!

The Australian’s will be determined not to let another Title head overseas and they have plenty of fire power for the Kiwis and Yanks to get over first. Nathan Smee and Adam Clarke both former Champions desperately want another Title and Dayne Kingshott now with McAllen Motorsports will be out to improve on his strong second behind Abreu at the recent Lismore International Midget Show.

While it is hard to go past Abreu and Bacon I would not be surprised if Dayne Kingshott brings another Title home to Western Australia for the McAllan Stable. The two nights of racing starts with the preliminary night Friday February 3rd and the Championship night Saturday February 4th.

Let  the hairs dance on the back of your neck this weekend at Archerfield Speedway for the Kratzman Caravan’s Australian Midget Speedcar ChampionshipKatzman Caravans logo

Michael Pickens is Australian Speedcar Champion

Australia one

Australia one

Valvoline Raceway: Michael Pickens packs the A1plate into his luggage and heads back home across the ditch with the most valuable and sought after prize in Australian Speedcar season .The Australian Championship will reside uncomfortably for many Speedcar fans in Auckland.
Whatever your view is on the International drivers competing in our National Title event there can be no question as to who has been the most outstanding driver cross all the international events both here in Australian and New Zealand .
Six Americans and 3 of his fellow Kiwis and 45 of Australia’s best have not been able to take the legendary 6 Times New Zealand Champ down.
Never far from the top of time sheets Pickens set the standard for others to match .Make no mistake this 40 lap Championship race had plenty of challengers for Pickens to overcome.

Pickens Clarke and Manders

Pickens Clarke and Manders

The defending Champion Adam Clarke returned to top form during the race and at times looked likely to get his hat trick of successive wins but tyre problems and the furious pace on the top by Felker and Pickens saw the Aussie No1 looking to get the best possible finish . .
The race was a stunner, no need for wings here but the determination and commitment at the front had the big crowd on their feet as the top four exchanged slides and traded positions.
For me the biggest surprise in the earlier Internationals and in the Championship Feature was the performance of Andrew Felker, he has been amazing.
The final laps of the race and it was impossible to predict the race winner and as it should be at all great Championships the winner emerged in the form of Pickens beating Felker by the smallest margin .With Clarke running the bottom trying to keep his tyres in shape Alex Bright drove around the outside to grab the final podium spot just ahead of the defending Champion.

Michael Pickens a worthy Champion and another reason why the Australian/New Zealand battle for sporting rivalry will continue to divide our two Nations in a positive and friendly way. This coming Saturday night at Western Springs Speedway the New Zealand Speedcar Championship will be run. Michael Pickens having already said in a tweet he might run the A1 could have divided loyalty particularly if he manages to record his 7thNew Zealand Title The question of eligibility will continue no doubt

Michael Pickens proves too strong Brisbane

Pickens on top in Brisbane

Pickens on top in Brisbane

New Zealand’s Michael Pickens ramped up the rivalry between Australia and New Zealand with his win in Brisbane at the Queensland round of the World Midget Series.
The multi Kiwi Champion continued his strong recent forms from the New Zealand rounds with a near perfect display over the 40 lap journey .Pickens well known and respected by Australia fans reminded us of his special talent in the mighty midget Speedcars.
Whenever Pickens gets behind the wheel of a speedcar you expect a powerful performance .With three Americans and three of his fellow countrymen also had their minds on taking the win.Coming into the second night of Brisbane show Pickens sat just adrift of expat New Zealand Champion Michael Kendall on points after the rain shortened first night.

Michael Pickens

Michael Pickens

Pickens raced to an early lead from pole sitter Tyler Thomas and the Kiwi were never headed for the duration of the race. Tyler Thomas looked like he may have an opportunity to press Pickens but with 6 laps to travel he was forced out .As good as Pickens was the standout on the night the 2013 POWRi Champion Andrew Felker .Felker was brilliant as he as he chased the lead .I would go so far as to say it was the best drive Felker has put down on any of his tours down under .

Lap 37 Felker was just stunning with his run around 2014 USAC Sprintcar Champ Bacon and Australian Nathan Smee to grab second behind Pickens. With the race entering the final stages Pickens had to deal with a flat right front and the charge from Felker. When the flag dropped after 40 laps Pickens was first across the stripe followed by Felker and Nathan Smee.

.

Andrew Felker

Andrew Felker

Smee overcame Bacon to win the battle for the final podium spot .After missing the first night Mosen and Williams charged into 5th and 7th with Brock Dean splitting the pair with his 6th place finish.

The Archerfield track proved a problem for Brady Bacon and Leon Burgess had a shocker in the opening heat, both spinning twice and being removed the race officials from the heat race.

Lance Magic man 34 Winner 2015

Neville Lance the 2013 Australian Speedcar Champion fought through cautions, crashes and final pressure from US POWRi star Austin Brown to take the ninth Magic Man 34 Title at the Perth Motorplex.
Lance a veteran of Western Australian Speedcars reminded fans that there is still life left in the old locksmith .The race promised so much after qualifying, heats and the pole shuffle. The build up to the 34 lap Feature saw some inspired racing topped off by the pole shuffle win by Darren Hagen over Queensland Troy Ware.

Troy Ware spinning

Troy Ware spinning

Adrenalin, enthusiasm at the start of any Championship race is part of the excitement and can generally lead to pile ups and damage to cars and driver‘s title aspirations .Such was the case for Ware and Hagen as they raced into the 3rd corner , lap one when Ware, the leading points scorer spun causing the early pile up and caution .The restart was called back and a third start finally had the field racing for Magic Man glory .Lee Redmond lead the restart with Hagen out and Ware forced back of field.
Redmond continued to lead with Tyler Thomas, Austin Brown and Davey Ray on the charge .Lap 7 and Thomas’s pressure finally opened the gap for the race lead.
For the next two laps Thomas exercise his authority over the field before suffering tire problems that had the American into the wall in turn one , nine laps in and once again Thomas is benched and an Aussie win goes begging , again for the likable young American.
Moving slowly forward from his 13th starting position Neville Lance was now challenging lee Redmond for the race lead and by lap 11 had the #14 racecar in the lead.
Behind Lance and Redmond the Americans were looking dangerous; they were coming .Davey Ray ahead of Brown while Kingshott and Smee were involved in their titanic battle.
Lap 18 was as far as Davey Ray’s race lasted forcing the 4 times winner infield and allowing Brown to start to chase down Redmond for second and to close down the lead Lance had built .The interest of the crowd was clear, could Lance withstand this late storming finish by Brown.
The charge to the finish was on, the crowd very clearly behind Lance .Last corner, last charge by Brown but the old master was not having any of it and closed out the American to cross the stripe as the ninth winner of the Magic Man 34 event. Lance a worthy Champion who in the past had race against the Magic Man but this was the first time that the Locksmith had made a Magic man podium .Redmond followed a close third with Kingshott holding off Smee for fifth .
Magic Man 34Podium 2015Magic Man 34 result: 1st Neville Lance, 2nd Austin Brown, 3rd Lee Redmond, 4th Dayne Kingshott, 5th Nathan Smee, 6th Todd Waddell, 7th Kaiden Manders, 8th Ben Hall, 9th Glen Mears, 10th Scott Glazebrook, 11th Alex Bright, 12th Phil Tremeer, 13th Domain Ramsay, 14th Jason Bell, 15th Graham Knuckey.
DNF: Davey Ray, Tyler Thomas, Troy Ware, Paul Farrell, Darren Hagen, Ryan Condren, Todd Bennett. DNS: Grant Draney and Chris Griffiths.
This year’s Magic man 34 was included as the opening round of inaugural Pro Speedcar Week with round two this Sunday at Moora Speedway in Western Australia followed by Kalgoorlie Speedway November 11 then moving into South Australia for Wyhalla Speedway November 13th and the Grand Final at Murray Bridge Speedway November
The five touring Americans and all the top Australian drivers will back in action at the remaining four rounds .Darren Hagen, Tyler Thomas and Austin Brown look to be the biggest threat to another Australian victory.
The Pro Speedcar Week team headed by Brett Thomas and Lee Redmond has put together a quality series that has brought 5 top class Americans to challenge many of Australia’s best over a short and sharp weeks racing.

On opposite sides of the World Speedway pays tributes to two great Champions .In Perth the ninth running of Magic Man 34 pays tribute to 4 times Australian Speedcar Champion Michael Figliomeni and 14,836 km away the Stockton Dirt Track California will for the 32nd year run the Garry Patterson Tribute race as the final meet in the King of the West Sprintcar Championship.
Figliomeni and Patterson both very different racecar drivers but both had that something special that set them apart from others. Both left us way too early but both left that special legacy that sees their fame continue long after their death.
I had the privilege of seeing both race, Patterson when I was only a youngster and the “Fig” as an as I grew into adulthood.
Each year when these special events come around I don’t need any video to recall the excitement and rush I felt back then, the human video my memory rewinds and images come thundering back .Both super wheelmen, different as chalk and cheese but both winners and Champions .
In Perth on Saturday night the Magic Man 34 field is amazing a real tribute .The race will be the first in the inaugural Pro Speedcar Week and features 5 Americans including four times Magic Man 34 winner Davey Ray, 2013 winner Alex Bright, Tyler Thomas, Austin Brown and 2012 USAC Midget Champ Daren Hagan.37 cars have been entered in what represents the strongest Magic Man 34 field for some time and in its own way a very special tribute to Michael Figliomeni .Revered on both sides of the Tasman and tracks in the US.

Dayne Kingshott to fly the Australian flag in the USA in 2015

King size new from Kingshott Racing

This news is what I have been waiting to hear from one if not the classiest young racer in Australia .So dominating right across Eastern and Western Australia .Multiple winner of the Speedcar pro Series Dayne Kingshott takes the next step in his career.

The following is the press release from Kingshott Racing

It’s with great excitement that we can announce our racing plans for the next 12 months.

Unfortunately for our local fans, it will be a limited season in the Kingsport Racing #24. Only taking in the new Pro Speedcar Week in November, with only 3 races in WA.

Later in the season Dayne will jump into the Bobby Smith owned Spike Esslinger for the Australian Speedcar Championship, with the possibility of some other races in the Smith owner car.

Dayne Kingshott Perth

Dayne Kingshott Perth

After some serious thought and discussion the team decided that the time was right to try their hand against the world’s best.

So…..

Following the Australian summer the team will pack their bags and head to the USA for a month long tour taking in both the Powri and USAC Midget weeks a hopefully getting in a few other races along the way.

This, funnily enough, was a difficult decision to make as it will affect racing for us in the Kingshott Racing #24 in Australia for some time.

This is a massive undertaking for our team, but is something that we feel we need to do.

Stay tuned for further updates and thank you for your support.” End release

Talking Speedway wishes Kingshott Racing ,Dayne and his entire crew great success with their POWRi and USAC programs.

The interest in the re-run event is very high and has attracted a entry list of 40 teams .Fans will remember the washed out event for the horrific accident that forced US POWRi National Champ Zach Daum to return home injured .Later in the night mother nature played her unbeatable hand with a massive down pour to end the night .

The rivalry between National Champion Clarke and Speedcar Super Series Champ Smee will continue .
